Inchworm, Phase 1: Sensory Awakenings

CATEGORY: Toys

(Lamaze)

For a newborn, who can't yet focus all that well and whose senses are still developing, start with a toy such as the Inchworm. It doesn't look super special, but it's specifically designed to appeal to your new baby. It has black-and-white and other high-contrast segments, which are what baby can see most easily. Different textures help develop babys sense of touch. Its "legs" are ribbons you can use to tie Inchworm near a changing table or carseat. Your baby can also make noise with the Inchworm since it contains a rattle inside. Its machine-washable (if you don't know how important that is, you soon will!) and safety-tested.

Tip of the week

Rotate your baby's favorite toys with those of friends' babies who are about the same age. This way your baby will get to enjoy new toys without you having to buy more.
